How long have you been volunteering for OGCancerNI?
Since I left work in 2018, so 7 years now.

What made you want to start volunteering?
As oesophago gastric cancer is still relatively rare, I really don’t think
the public realise what a difficult cancer it is, as the treatment is very
complex with potential complications. Having worked as a health care
professional in the Oesophagogastric cancer team for many years I
could see how challenging the treatment could be both emotionally and
physically, for both the person affected and those important to them. The
recovery often involves adapting to a new way of eating which has a big
impact on daily life. Until recent years there was very little information
or support available after the end of treatment. For this reason myself
and one of the surgeons set up a support meetings, which preceded
OGCancerNI . People seemed to get great benefit from just chatting
and sharing experiences with others who were further along their
recovery. However we were very limited in what we could provide as
there was only a handful of volunteers. So when I left work, I wanted to
“give something back” and do something worthwhile so decided to
become a volunteer for the group which by then had been succeeded by
Helen at OGCANCERNI and was going from strength to strength

What all do you do for the Charity?
I am a committee member and Trustee so am involved in the generally
running and decision making of the group.

I am one of three volunteer co-ordinators. My role is to organise dates
and plan the volunteers schedule with Lorraine, for the Information Desk,
which is present most Tuesdays at Belfast City Hospital.
I am involved in the information Sub Committee which is currently
looking at updating and writing new information leaflets and banners for
OGCancerNI. We are very lucky as the majority of our volunteers have
personal experience so are a great source of information for our leaflets.
They are happy to share their experiences of oesophago gastric cancer
and provide tips and suggestions to help others
As well as enjoying the company of this group, over a few cups of
coffee, I enjoy this type of work and hope to get a good sense of
achievement when competed!
When I can, I help out at agricultural shows, fundraising, raising
awareness events and Wellbeing meetings.

What would you tell any patients or their family members thinking
about getting involved?
I would highly recommend volunteering for OGCancer, there is
something for everybody…you could be helping at a raising awareness
stand, driving a van, if you have a skill we will use it! It is very
rewarding, great fun and you meet some great people along the way.
Our volunteers often comment on the feeling of a “community”.
You will meet other volunteers who are further along their recovery and
can give you support and tips, maybe even share a few recipes!
Likewise, you may be a great support and reassurance to someone
newly diagnosed, which is very rewarding and may help your confidence
and self esteem
As health care professionals often help out at some events, it is useful to
have access to them.
There is usually a small annual event for our volunteers to get together
and for OGCancer to show their appreciation and to thank our
volunteers for everything they do.

It can never be underestimated how much it can help somebody newly
diagnosed and about to start treatment, to meet a volunteer a few years
down the line after treatment. Recently I heard a lady as above tell one
of our volunteers…… “ just seeing you here and doing so well, you have
made my day”. It made our volunteers day too.
