What a day!
Despite heavy showers, thunder and lightning, over 100 cyclists took part in OGCancerNI’s 2019 Oesophacycle cycling sportive on Saturday 29th June raising thousands of pounds for those affected by oesophago-gastric cancer.
Every year over 400 people in Northern Ireland are diagnosed with Oesophago-Gastric cancer. Survival rates are relatively low. The latest statistics show that 83% of patients diagnosed at a late stage will die within five years. Those diagnosed at an early stage have the best chance of successful treatment yet only 7.6% of people are diagnosed at stage I. Incidences of this cancer are on the rise and one of the main problems we face is lack of awareness of the symptoms.
The Oesophacycle was an important fundraising and awareness raising event for OGCancerNI’s Catch It Early campaign. The hope is that every person who took part will tell their friends and family, helping to get the message out there that support is available, whilst also raising funds for upper GI support and services.
This year cyclists rode 44, or 66 mile routes setting off from Portadown, heading to Newry where they had the opportunity to refuel before completing the return leg or cycling on to Carlingford. The 44 mile route to Newry and back was a relatively level route and provided a fantastic ride along the Newry Canal Towpath. Those taking on the 66 mile route along the road showed true grit in completing the ride in great time. Riders who cycled to Carlingford received a warm welcome from Martina and her team who provided plenty of refreshments.
We are beyond grateful to all the participants and volunteers who made the event possible. Funds are still being counted and we will update the total shortly.
