OGCancerNI recently helped fund a specialist training event hosted by UGI CNSs to help train their community colleagues, caring for OG patients in community settings.
The aim of the event was to support the community colleagues to care for OG patients in the community setting and know when to reach out to the specialist CNS and dietetics teams in the acute setting.
However, due to a limited number of staff being able to attend the live event at Dunsilly Hotel on the day, OGCancerNI were happy to provide funding to allow the training sessions to be filmed, thus allowing the valuable information to be shared amongst a greater reach and become a valuable training resource within the primary sector.
People with OG cancers and their families will benefit as the educational recording will enable those caring for them in the community to have a greater understanding of the specialist needs of OG patients and how to identify early warning signs that someone is deteriorating and may need support from the specialist acute team within their trust. Building up a strong working relationship
between the acute and community teams will ensure early intervention for any issues that may occur and should minimise people being admitted unnecessarily to hospital. Or where admission is necessary, to ensure this is a coordinated process rather than a traumatic experience for the person with OG cancer and their family.
